Nonprofit Program Design (mini-course) with David Harrison

Thursdays, October 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 3pm-5pm at Bainbridge Community Foundation

This four class course is being offered by David Harrison, senior lecturer emeritus from the University of Washington’s Evans School.

It will focus on every aspect of how nonprofits can make certain that the existing programs they strengthen or the new programs they design and develop will meet standards of excellence and best serve their communities. It is intended for executive directors and senior staff members who have a solid understanding of core nonprofit management principles. The course will explore how to: align an organization’s strategies and resources; examine current and prospective markets and means of support; develop new programs or significantly improve current ones; and analyze program alternatives to determine which is likely to be the most effective.

Real Time Strategic Planning with David Marzahl

Thursday, November 12 from 10am to noon at Bainbridge Performing Arts

Non-profit consultant David Marzahl will address challenges faced by organizations when they plan for the future. In today’s volatile world, an organization’s recently completed strategic plan might already be out of date. That’s not a planning failure. It’s a sign that strategies need to live in ongoing conversation and deliberation, not in a document reviewed two years ago. This session will build on real-time strategic planning principles. It will give attending board members and executive leaders practical tools for making strategic planning a regular part of how they work together, not a once a year event. Organizations will leave with a concrete action plan for making strategic planning an ongoing part of their work together.

Improving Core Financial Reporting with Erin Thomasson

Thursday, December 3 from 10am to noon at Bainbridge Performing Arts

Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) chair Erin Thomasson will discuss the core financial statements that help organizations understand and improve their fiscal health. This workshop will explore how these reports provide insight into an organization’s financial position, revenues, expenditures, and cash flow, and why recognizing financial strengths and weaknesses is essential to informed decisionmaking. Participants will also learn how high-quality financial reporting can better engage boards, avoid common reporting errors, and through a clinic using financial statements submitted in advance, see real-time examples of improved financial reporting.

About the BCF Nonprofit Education Series

BCF strives to help nonprofit leaders develop and implement the best possible practices in carrying out their programs and advancing their missions. Our surveys of nonprofits on Bainbridge Island and throughout Kitsap County have identified these priority needs for ongoing education and training:

  • Improving Marketing and Communication
  • Building Quality, Efficiency and Depth of Programming
  • Maintaining Effective Board Governance
  • Developing Powerful Strategic Plans
  • Securing Sufficient Resources
  • Assuring Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Each year, BCF offers a series of workshops and mini courses to meet these needs. Each of these sessions is free. In addition to presentations by skilled trainers/facilitators, they include responses and additional guidance from experienced local nonprofit program managers, and lively discussions by all participants.

BCF also hosts a quarterly roundtable to help nonprofit organizations to focus upon diversity, equity and inclusion. BCF has asked trainers and facilitators to integrate DEI practices into all mini-courses and workshops.
