COVID-19 Nonprofit Survey Results
An extended shelter-in-place in Washington State could mean some Bainbridge Island nonprofits will have to shut down operations indefinitely, according to a survey commissioned by the Bainbridge Community Foundation (BCF) in partnership with the Kitsap Community Foundation. Out of the 56 nonprofit leaders on Bainbridge Island who replied to the survey, 30% said they would face significant challenges stemming from a shelter-in-place lasting only a month—which quickly became a reality on Thursday, April 2 when Governor Inslee extended the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” emergency order until May 4, 2020. This means that almost one-third of nonprofits will struggle to stay afloat with the current order. After two months of shelter-in-place, the number jumps to almost 50% of respondents who said they would have significant challenges and around 5% of nonprofits would likely not survive at all. After three months, over 10% claim they would not survive. After six months, the situation becomes dire with almost 30% of nonprofits that say they would not survive, and another 60% would face significant challenges. Only around 5% would be able to survive without major changes to their operations.
